Watering Tips

When you purchase your tree, I highly recommend you purchase a moisture meter as well. This inexpensive gadget cost me less than $10.00, and all my houseplants are thriving since I am not overwatering them. Most of us overwater our plants, and that is why we find growing them such a challenge?

  • Never Allow the Soil to Become Dry
  • Always Keep the Soil Moist
  • Avoid Overwatering
  • South Facing Windows are Best
  • East or West is Your Next Best Choices
  • North Facing Windows will Work if You Have No Other Choice

My plant is placed in front of my apartment balcony facing east, I have had no problems with the plant in an east-facing window? That is what is awesome about the Hawaiian Umbrella Plant, you can get away without the perfect lighting and it still will grow beautiful for you.

Easy To Care Beginners Recommendations

The most vulnerable time for your bonsai is during the winter months, and this is even more true when you live in a colder winter climate as I do? I am going to share with you some tips on caring for this tree during this time of the year.

  • Place Under your Tree a Shallow Tray with Pebbles and Water
  • This will Provide the Extra Moisture your Plant will Need
  • By Providing this Simple Tray your Tree will be Happy all Winter Long

You will add a layer of pebbles in the shallow tray, and then just add water. As the water evaporates this provides the moisture they need, you need the pebbles to prevent root rot. So be sure to add pebbles to protect the roots, and you are able to purchase a tray when you buy your plant at the same time.

Feeding Time

You will need to provide nutrients for the new addition to your indoor garden, since your plant is growing in a very small amount of soil you need to keep adding nutrients.

  • General-Purpose Fertilizer
  • Dilute to Half of the Strength
  • Apply Once Per Month During the Growing Season
  • Fertilizing not Needed During the Winter Months
  • Water-Soluble Fertilizer Spray Optional

Now you understand how to feed your prized plant, I am sure you are starting to see caring for these is not nearly as complicated as most of us thought it would be.

Training Your Bonsai

As I mentioned earlier you are much better to purchase a bonsai already shaped, you will find it takes a professional to train and shapes these types of exotic plants. I highly recommend you purchase one trained, but this is something you will have to decide on your own?

  • Pinch & Trim any New Growth Regularly
  • Depending on your Preference of the Size & Shape Determines this Maintenance
  • You will find Depending on the Bonais Tree How Often this will Need to be Done

This maintenance is not time-consuming, you just need to keep an eye on your tree’s new growth. Mine is very easy since I bought it already shaped, so all I have to do to keep it the same size and shape is to pinch and trim any new growth. There is no right or wrong way, you are in full control that is what bonsai gardening is all about?

Repotting Tips

The last thing for you to learn is about repotting your plant, you will only need to do this approximately every two to three years for most of these trees. Since this is not a set rule for all bonsai’s, you will need to know when it is time?

  • Approximately Every 2-3 Years
  • Evergreens Every 4-5 Years
  • Whenever the Root System Fills the Pot is the Right Time
  • Mid-Summer is the Best Time of the Year
  • Placing a Screen in the bottom of the Pot is Recommended
  • A Layer of Pebbles on Top of the Screen
  • Add your New Soil on Top of the Pebbles
  • Plant to the Previous Height
  • Now Water your Plant Until the Soil is Moist

This is how to take care of your Hawaiian Umbrella Bonsai Tree, now this really is not nearly as complicated or as much work as many of you might have thought? I have enjoyed this one so much, I have recently added several of the others on the best plants for beginners. They all are growing very happily in my apartment right now, if this article has been informational please share it with your family and friends.
